The event, held at Meralco’s headquarters in Pasig City as part of its 122nd founding anniversary, brought together more than 150 animal welfare advocates, city veterinarians, and Meralco employees.
Titled “Powering Compassion: CATropa and kaBARKada Unite,” the seminar aimed to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership, ethical animal care, and effective stray management solutions.
Among the key speakers was Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) executive director Atty. Anna Cabrera, who underscored the impact of pet rescue and adoption.
“If you give animals a chance, they show us the very best aspects of our humanity. They have so much love to give, and I hope we can love them back—especially those who are homeless, helpless, and voiceless,” Cabrera said.
Biyaya Animal Care president and co-founder Rina Ortiz emphasized the significance of Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) programs as a humane and effective method of managing stray animals.
Ortiz also called for greater community involvement in ensuring a safer and healthier environment for both animals and people.
Meralco vice president and head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga reiterated the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting animal welfare initiatives, including spay and neuter programs.
“Our treatment of animals reflects who we are as a people. Let us choose kindness and responsibility because we protect our future by protecting them,” he said.
The seminar was made possible through partnerships with PAWS, Biyaya Animal Care, Cats of Ortigas, Cats of Kapitolyo, Mandaluyong City Veterinarian Office, Barkmission, Adopt.ph, and several other animal welfare advocates and sponsors.
With shared efforts and continued support, Meralco and its partners are fostering a more compassionate society—one that prioritizes the well-being of both animals and the communities they live in. — Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
