As the Philippines’ second-busiest airport, MCIA is poised to capitalize on its 2024 achievements, reinforcing its role as a key driver of connectivity and economic progress in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.
The airport’s continued success aligns with Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. (AIC)’s 10th anniversary and its preparations to take over the Laguindingan International Airport in April 2025 and Bohol-Panglao International Airport in June 2025.
“Our vision for MCIA and our broader airports portfolio is to redefine the travel experience by integrating world-class operations, sustainable practices, and cultural relevance,” AIC president and CEO Cosette V. Canilao said in a statement.
Expansion plans, partnerships
MCIA’s 2024 operational success has set the stage for greater expansion in 2025. The airport strengthened partnerships with Cebu Pacific and welcomed United Airlines in July 2024, paving the way for additional international routes in the coming year.
To further enhance travel efficiency, MCIA launched Cebu Connect, an air-to-air transfer solution, and Cebu+, a port-to-airport connectivity initiative in collaboration with Mactan Wharf Corporation and Supercat Fast Ferry Corp. These initiatives will be further optimized in 2025 to make inter-island and international travel even more seamless.
MCIA also earned Level 1 Accessibility Accreditation from Airports Council International (ACI) in 2024 for its PWD-friendly amenities, with further improvements planned for 2025.
Meanwhile, the airport is campaigning for the Best Airport Staff award at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2025, reflecting its top-tier customer service.
After handling a record 11.3 million passengers in 2024—up 13 percent from 2023—MCIA expects further passenger growth and operational efficiency gains in 2025.
Green, silent airport initiatives
Following its Platinum Green Airport Award and Airport Carbon Accreditation wins in 2024, MCIA is advancing its Net Zero Roadmap in 2025. A new memorandum of understanding (MOU) with ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East supports MCIA’s transition to energy-efficient Bridge-Mounted Equipment (BME), reducing carbon emissions and operational costs.
Additionally, MCIA will expand its Silent Airport initiative to further enhance passenger experience in 2025.
A future-ready airport
MCIA’s cultural and economic impact will also grow in 2025. Following National Artist Kidlat Tahimik’s “Indio-Genius” installation in 2024, MCIA plans to deepen collaborations with Cebu’s tourism and business sectors.
With AIC’s full ownership of ACAC, a clear roadmap for expansion, and stronger sustainability efforts, MCIA is well-positioned for sustained success in 2025. — Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
