Insider Spotlight

  • Vietnam tops list of priciest ATM fees for Filipino travelers at 27.1%
  • Data drawn from 9.7 million ATM withdrawals globally
  • Wise urges travelers to plan smart and avoid hidden foreign charges

Filipinos are practical travelers — but many still lose money to hidden ATM and currency conversion fees when spending abroad, global money platform Wise said in a press release.

Wise said some of the country’s favorite travel destinations are also among the most expensive places to withdraw cash overseas.

By the numbers

Vietnam topped the list with an average withdrawal fee of 27.10 percent, followed by South Korea (5.80 percent,), Thailand (2.50 percent,), and the United States (2.05 percent,), based on a BusinessMirror report dated Aug. 26, 2025.

Other destinations included Singapore (1.28 percent,), Japan (0.87 percent,), UAE (0.81 percent,), Taiwan (0.53percent,), Switzerland (0.12 percent), and Hong Kong (0.03 percent).

About the ATM Fees Analysis

The figures are based on 9.7 million ATM withdrawals made using Wise cards over a six-month period from February to July 2025. Each listed destination recorded at least 500 transactions, with percentages reflecting the average ATM fees per country. These do not include hidden margins or extra costs embedded in exchange rates.

Why it matters

Small fees can quietly drain travel budgets, especially during the peak holiday season. “Because every peso counts, especially during the busiest travel season of the year, it pays to plan smartly and keep more money in your pocket for pasalubong,” Wise said.

How to travel smarter

Wise advises travelers to:

  • Set a realistic budget using the 50-30-20 rule (50 percent of your income for needs, 30  percent for wants, 20 percent for savings)
  • Automate savings — P3,000 monthly can grow to P36,000 in a year, enough for a five-day Thailand trip
  • Book early and choose practical stays with kitchen access
  • Pay in local currency to avoid inflated Dynamic Currency Conversion charges

The big picture

Wise’s multi-currency card uses Smart Conversion technology to automatically pick the lowest conversion rate, helping travelers “spend like a local — and keep more money for pasalubong.” —Ramon C. Nocon | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
