More than a third of Filipino online shoppers are becoming more deliberate about what they buy, checking authenticity, comparing value and weighing buyer protection instead of simply hunting for the lowest price, according to a new regional study.

The 2026 eCommerce Savvy Shopper Report by Cube, in partnership with Lazada, found that 36 percent of Filipino online shoppers qualified as “Savvy Shoppers,” the highest share among six Southeast Asian markets surveyed.

Another 22 percent were classified as “Near-Savvy,” meaning they met the benchmark in three of four dimensions measured by the study. Combined, 58 percent of Filipino respondents fell into either category.

The study surveyed 6,000 online shoppers across Southeast Asia.

Beyond discounts

Cube defined Savvy Shoppers as respondents who scored above the regional median across four areas: Verification, Value Optimisation, Confidence & Protection, and Digital Fluency.

In practice, these consumers research purchases, compare value, use digital tools and consider post-purchase support before deciding what to buy.

The findings suggest that price alone is becoming less important in determining where Filipinos spend their money online.

Only 17 percent of Filipino respondents said they would buy from a less familiar seller in exchange for a bigger discount. Just 13 percent would accept fewer signals of product authenticity, while 9 percent were willing to settle for weaker warranty, return or refund protection.

“This year’s findings show that shopper savviness is becoming a key marker of market maturity, shaped by how consumers verify products, assess value, manage risk and use digital tools,” Cube Asia co-founder Simon Torring said in a statement.

“The most interesting takeaway is that savvy shopping is not simply about price sensitivity; it is about consumers becoming more deliberate, informed and confident in the way they navigate eCommerce,” he added.

Higher spending

That greater scrutiny does not necessarily translate into lower spending.

The study found that Savvy Shoppers in the Philippines reported 47 percent higher monthly spending than General Shoppers, suggesting that consumers who spend more time evaluating purchases are also more commercially engaged.

Across Southeast Asia, Savvy Shoppers were 1.4 times more likely to be high spenders.

The report estimated a weighted spending gap of $11.5 billion between Savvy and General Shoppers within Southeast Asia’s $160-billion annual e-commerce marketplace spending.

Savvy consumers also look beyond information provided on shopping platforms.

According to the study, a large majority routinely cross-check off-platform reviews, social commerce content and brand websites and use artificial intelligence-enabled search tools to verify products and sellers before completing purchases.

Trust matters

Buyer protection remains a key consideration across age groups.

The study found that both Gen Z and Gen X shoppers in the Philippines showed a willingness to pay more for stronger purchase protection, official brand guarantees and easier returns.

But Confidence & Protection also emerged as the biggest remaining hurdle for Filipinos classified as Near-Savvy.

Among this group, 45 percent fell short on that dimension alone, according to the report.

The findings come as e-commerce platforms compete not only on prices and promotions but also on authenticity guarantees, returns, refunds and other services intended to build consumer trust.

Shopping safeguards

In the same statement, Lazada Philippines CEO Carlos Barrera said the findings indicated that getting a good deal increasingly means more than securing the cheapest price.

“It’s about having peace of mind,” Barrera said.

Lazada said its LazMall gives shoppers access to official brand stores with a 100-percent authenticity guarantee and a 30-day return policy. The platform also offers voucher stacking, comparison and discovery tools, customer care and refund policies.

“Through official LazMall guarantees, transparent return frameworks, and reliable post-purchase support, our focus is to give every Filipino shopper the confidence that their money and trust are well-protected,” Barrera said.

The study suggests that as online shopping becomes a bigger part of everyday consumption, Filipino shoppers are increasingly looking beyond discounts and asking whether products are authentic, purchases are protected and the overall deal offers value for money. — Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
