The proposed investment aims to introduce advanced clinical services, strengthen medical research and provide training opportunities for Filipino healthcare professionals, according to the Department of Finance (DOF).
The hospital campus is also envisioned to reduce the need for Filipinos to seek specialized treatments abroad while supporting the country's ambitions to become a medical tourism destination.
Finance Secretary Frederick Go recently met with representatives of BSMH, together with officials from the Board of Investments (BOI) and Fiscal Incentives Review Board (FIRB), to discuss the project's development.
Healthcare investment
The discussions build on Go's initial meeting with BSMH in Washington, D.C., in July 2025 during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s working visit to the United States.
At the time, the US healthcare operator expressed interest in developing a premium tertiary hospital in the Philippines.
Since then, the government has continued coordinating with the company and relevant agencies to advance the proposed investment.
“Since our initial meeting with Bon Secours Mercy Health, we have worked closely with the company to make this project a reality. This is an opportunity to bring advanced and world-class medical services closer to Filipino patients, develop the next generation of healthcare professionals, and create thousands of quality jobs. We are excited to see this project move forward and ensure that its benefits reach more Filipinos,” Go said.
Medical training
Beyond hospital services, the project is expected to strengthen healthcare education through annual training placements for doctors and nurses, international rotations and professional development programs.
The planned facility would also support medical research and development while expanding local capacity to deliver specialized treatments.
BSMH chief clinical development officer Dr. Michael Todd said the proposed hospital would build on the company's existing presence in the Philippines.
“Bon Secours Mercy Health is very excited about the opportunity to contribute to the Filipino healthcare sector, building on the launch of our global business center which opened in October 2025,” Todd said.
Investment support
The DOF said the proposed development forms part of government efforts to attract investments in healthcare infrastructure, medical education and other high-value services.
Go, who also chairs the FIRB, assured investors of continued government support for projects that expand domestic capabilities and create employment opportunities.
The DOF said it would continue coordinating with relevant agencies and investors to facilitate the project.
The government has yet to disclose the hospital's estimated investment cost, construction timetable or target opening date. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
