Large hospitals in Metro Manila sent out advisories warning of an uptick in COVID-19 infections while stressing that cases have been mild and the situation remains “manageable”.

The Makati Medical Center, in an advisory on May 20, said it increased capacity from zero to 12 beds in recent days.

“Our daily COVID-19 occupancy varies from 50-70 percent, mostly patients with co-morbidities or patients with other serious illnesses who have tested positive for COVID-19,” according to the hospital, which is part of Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Health.

Healthcare workers infected with the virus, which triggered a two-year global healthcare crisis that started in early 2020, are currently isolated at home.

“Overall, the COVID-19 situation is very manageable. While we maintain that there is no reason for alarm, we emphasize basic infection control practices [e.g., masking, handwashing, cough etiquette, etc.],” Makati Medical Center said.

The Medical City also warned of the rise in inpatient and outpatient COVID-19 cases.

It encouraged the public to be vigilant in wearing masks, follow strict hygiene practices and to self-report confirmed COVID-19 test results.

“While many cases are mild, let's work together to prevent further spread,” The Medical City said.
