Business groups want stronger military, coast guard after maritime incident

Leading Philippine business groups have called on the government to enhance the capabilities of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in the wake of the recent escalation in the maritime standoff against China.

In a joint statement, 17 business organizations also expressed their gratitude for the dedication and sacrifices of AFP and PCG personnel in safeguarding the nation.

The business groups emphasized the importance of modernizing and transforming these forces into responsive and self-reliant units to ensure peace and security, which are crucial for economic growth.

They also condemned the harassment faced by AFP and PCG personnel and advocated for a non-violent resolution to national sovereignty issues.

“We call for a whole-of-nation approach to address current threats to national security,” the statement read.

The signatories include prominent organizations like the Makati Business Club, Management Association of the Philippine, and Cebu Business Club, among others.

They urged unity and a peaceful resolution that respects the rights of the Filipino people as a peace-loving nation.
