SMC removes 93,000 tons of waste from Parañaque rivers to mitigate NAIA flooding

San Miguel Corp., through its “Better Rivers PH” initiative, has removed 93,000 tons of waste and silt from the Parañaque rivers as of late last week, the conglomerate said on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Jan. 28, 2025, the firm said this project is aimed at mitigating persistent flooding in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) area and nearby communities.

The cleanup spans 1.9 kilometers of river channels, including the Parañaque River, Don Galo River, and junctions with the San Dionisio and Villanueva creeks.

San Miguel has also de-clogged storm drain lines along Domestic Road and NAIA Terminal 4, reopening 54 manholes and constructing 10 new ones for improved flood prevention and maintenance.

“Flooding has been a long-standing issue for Parañaque and NAIA, particularly during typhoon season,” said San Miguel chair and CEO Ramon Ang. “Through Better Rivers PH and with support from government agencies, we were able to implement sustainable solutions that we hope will deliver lasting benefits to residents, businesses, and travelers.”

San Miguel's chair and CEO says the river clean up comes at no cost to the government.

San Miguel’s cleanup efforts, carried out at no cost to the government, were informed by bathymetric surveys that identified bottlenecks restricting water flow to Manila Bay. These findings guided targeted desilting operations in critical areas.

This project is being undertaken in collaboration with government agencies, including the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the Parañaque City government.

Since its launch in 2020, San Miguel said its waterway cleanup drive has removed over 8 million tons of waste from 156 kilometers of rivers in Luzon, covering major waterways such as the Pasig River and Tullahan River.

The firm said it remains committed to similar efforts in Laguna and Navotas City.
