Razon’s Prime Infra powers up Upper Wawa pumping station with clean energy

Prime Infra-led WawaJVCo has successfully energized the Upper Wawa Pumping Station, a key component of the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project, on March 31, 2025.

Insider spotlight:

  • Pumping station energized and connected to Meralco grid
  • Switched to retail electricity supply via PrimeRES
  • Fully powered by renewable energy
  • Facility can deliver 518 million liters/day
  • Performance tests set for June
  • Part of project supplying 710 million liters per day to 700,000 households

In a statement, the firm controlled by billionaire Enrique Razon Jr. said the facility was connected to the Meralco grid and transitioned to the contestable electricity market under the retail competition and ppen access framework on the same day.

The switch to retail electricity supply was made possible through a contract with PrimeRES Energy Corp., a subsidiary of Primelectric Holdings Inc.

The pumping station is now fully powered by renewable energy.

“The energization of the Upper Wawa pumping station is an important step for the bulk water project towards securing reliable water supply in the long-term,” Prime Infra market sector lead for water and WawaJVCo president Melvin John Tan said.

“Our switch to retail electricity supply also enables us to adopt cost-efficient power solutions and fulfill our commitment to sustainable solutions as the pumping station will be fully powered by clean and renewable energy sources,” he added.

Located in Antipolo City, the Upper Wawa pumping station features a 65-meter deep shaft, a one-kilometer tunnel, and a conveyance pipeline capable of delivering 518 million liters of raw water per day. The facility will deliver water to the Manila Water treatment plant for distribution across Metro Manila.

Performance acceptance tests are scheduled for June 2025 to simulate operational conditions. The energization and market switch were completed with the support of Prime Metro BMD Corp. (PrimeBMD) and the local government of Antipolo City.

The broader Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project, developed and operated by WawaJVCo, will provide up to 710 million liters of water per day, aiming to serve more than 700,000 households or 3.5 million people when fully operational.
