The move follows a public statement by PLDT chair Manuel V. Pangilinan, who said the group is prioritizing communication access for Filipinos affected by the conflict.
"Worrying about our overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). I’ve asked PLDT and Smart to offer free calls for Filipinos in countries affected by the conflict in the Middle East. Details to follow, but the marching order is to make it as easy as possible for our countrymen to reach their loved ones, and vice versa," Pangilinan posted on his twitter account on March 2, 2026.
What’s happening
The ongoing conflict in parts of the Middle East has raised fears for the safety of millions of migrant workers, including a significant Filipino community deployed across the region in sectors such as healthcare, construction, energy and domestic work.
In response, Pangilinan confirmed that PLDT is extending free international call services through its digital platforms.
"PLDT is offering free calls to the PH for Pinoys in Iran, Israel, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia through our TinBo app (via Smart Virtual Number)."
The free calls are designed to allow Filipinos abroad to contact family members in the Philippines without incurring additional charges during the crisis period.
Why it matters
Remittances from OFWs remain a pillar of the Philippine economy, contributing billions of dollars annually and supporting household consumption.
Disruptions caused by geopolitical instability can have ripple effects not only on families but also on broader economic activity.
Ensuring uninterrupted communication is seen as a first-line support mechanism while government agencies assess conditions on the ground.
Support from home
The initiative also extends to subscribers in the Philippines seeking to reach relatives in affected areas.
"PLDT, Smart, and TNT subscribers in the PH will also be able to call their loved ones in those same countries for free. We’re offering this until March 7, and will monitor the need for an extension."
PLDT and Smart have also activated crisis support lines to assist affected customers.
"Filipinos can also call our Smart crisis hotline to be connected with their loved ones at home. It’s free, and open 24/7 at +63288457799. You can also call the DMW-OWWA 1348 hotline through the TinBo app. Our team will post more details on their official socmed accounts."
The telco group said it will continue monitoring developments and coordinate with relevant agencies to support Filipinos overseas as the situation evolves. —Vanessa Hidalgo | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
