“Technology is a game-changer,” said Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP and head of stakeholder engagement at PLDT and Smart.
“For small business owners and independent service providers, AI adoption can amplify reach and income potential.”
Why it matters:
AI tools, once considered accessible only to large firms, are now being democratized through programs like this—empowering grassroots entrepreneurs to scale faster, produce better content, and streamline operations.
Driving the initiative:
The training was facilitated by MK Bertulfo, Founder and CEO of Filipina Homebased Moms, Inc. (FHMoms), and covered:
Use of large language models for customer support, marketing copy, and brochures.
Generative AI tools for music, video, and design content creation.
Voices from the field:
“AI has been a great help. Our logo was designed with AI,” said Daryl Torres, co-founder of a local condiments brand.
“It’s a must that we regularly create content that attracts potential customers and drives engagement.”
“Now, I can create original music that we can use at weddings or in our event videos,” shared Maria Kristina Bari, a freelance event coordinator.
The bigger picture:
AI-in-a-Box is part of a broader effort by PLDT and Smart to bridge the digital divide through initiatives like eBizNovation and IDEATe (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Advocacy through Technology). These programs also align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, specifically UNSDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and UNSDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
“AI-in-a-Box supports the vision of a future where AI is not just a tool—but a catalyst for building smarter, more inclusive, and more resilient communities,” PLDT and Smart said in a statement. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
