Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has mobilized its response teams as Typhoon Paolo continues to bring heavy rains across Luzon, with portions of its franchise area placed under Wind Signal No. 1.

The country’s largest power distributor said it remains on “full alert” to address any electricity service disruptions caused by the typhoon’s impact.

“We advise our customers to exercise extra caution to ensure their safety, as the threat of flooding heightens the risk of electrical accidents,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications.

Why it matters

With intense rainfall increasing the risk of flooding, electrical hazards become a serious safety concern.

Meralco’s proactive stance is part of its standard contingency measures during severe weather disturbances, which typically involve prepositioning crews and equipment to respond swiftly to power interruptions.

Safety first

Meralco issued a list of critical safety reminders for customers, particularly in flood-prone areas:

  • Switch off the main power switch or circuit breaker immediately.
  • Avoid contact with electrical appliances or wiring when wet or standing on damp surfaces.
  • Unplug appliances and remove light bulbs when possible.
  • Stay away from exposed or dangling electrical wires.
  • Hire licensed electricians to inspect systems before restoring power after floods
