Insider Spotlight

  • LEGO is rolling out free interactive playgrounds in malls nationwide through July
  • The initiative blends traditional Filipino street games with hands-on brick building
  • The campaign targets children while tapping nostalgia among adults who grew up with LEGO

Manila's weekend routine for many families has become a familiar scene: children glued to tablets while parents juggle limited entertainment options in a city with few accessible green spaces.

The LEGO Group is hoping to change that. Starting this June, the company is transforming select mall atriums across the Philippines into free interactive playgrounds under its "Play Builds You" campaign, combining traditional Filipino street games with hands-on LEGO building activities.

The initiative comes as parents increasingly seek alternatives to screen time while balancing the rising cost of family outings.

According to the 2024 LEGO Play Well Report, 98 percent of parents believe play strengthens family bonds and helps children develop skills such as creative thinking, problem-solving, and resilience.

The big picture

Beyond children, the campaign also taps into a growing nostalgia trend among consumers. By pairing familiar Filipino childhood games with the iconic LEGO brick, the company is creating a multi-generational experience designed to resonate with adults who grew up building LEGO sets and can now share that pastime with their own families.

The strategy broadens the appeal of the activation beyond toy shoppers, positioning it as a family destination for both children and the young at heart.

Visitors can participate in a life-sized version of piko, or hopscotch, where children first build their own pamato using LEGO bricks before tossing it onto the playing grid.

Nearby, a large-scale maze replaces traditional mobile gaming experiences. Participants navigate a marble through a brick-built labyrinth using a physical control board, encouraging hands-on experimentation and problem-solving.

Why it matters

The free admission model addresses affordability concerns for Filipino families seeking weekend activities.

Participants who complete the challenge grid will receive a complimentary LEGO "Make & Take" mini-set that can be built on-site and brought home, extending the offline play experience beyond the event itself.

The interactive playgrounds will run every weekend until the end of July across participating Toy Kingdom and Toys"R"Us branches nationwide.

Rustan's locations will host activities throughout June, while LEGO Certified Stores will rotate activities among selected branches every weekend during the month.

What’s next

The campaign is also supported by retail promotions running until July 31, 2026. Selected LEGO product lines, including City, Friends, DUPLO, and NINJAGO, are available at discounts of up to 30 percent.

Shoppers who spend P3,000 on participating LEGO sets can also receive complimentary retail-exclusive polybags, subject to availability.

For LEGO, the initiative serves as both a community engagement effort and a retail driver, using experiential play to reinforce the brand's relevance among a new generation of builders while rekindling memories for longtime fans. —Ramon C. Nocon | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
