San Miguel river cleanup boosts flood resilience amid garbage woes

The company said rivers covered by its Better Rivers PH initiative continued to carry large volumes of stormwater without major overflows in most locations, even as intense rainfall battered parts of Luzon. The main exception occurred along portions of the San Juan River on Aug. 17, when exceptionally heavy rainfall pushed water levels beyond critical levels.

SMC river cleanup clears silt, waste to strengthen flood defenses

The cleanup covered 6.1 kilometers of the river, stretching from its junction with the Pasig River to Talayan in Quezon City. According to the company, the work is intended to sustain improvements achieved during its earlier rehabilitation project from 2022 to 2024, when about 322,000 metric tons of waste and silt were removed across the river’s entire 7.6-kilometer length.
