This pioneering initiative introduces the country’s first flexible, premium learning platform dedicated exclusively to IC design and microelectronics, aimed at bridging the talent gap and driving innovation in the local semiconductor industry.
Microelectronics innovation hub
As the demand for semiconductor talent surges globally, Muntinlupa is quickly positioning itself as a microelectronics innovation hub in Metro Manila.
With 13 microelectronics companies operating in the city, collaborative ecosystems between academia and industry are flourishing. CDM serves as a crucial foundation, offering industry-grade laboratories and a robust engineering curriculum to nurture future Filipino innovators.
LABS by Xinyx supplements existing BS Electronics Engineering programs and creates new learning pathways for senior high school students, university students, STEM graduates, educators, and industry professionals.
Real-world IC design demand
The platform features hands-on training, expert mentorship, and globally aligned coursework, delivered through online, in-person, or hybrid formats—designed to match real-world IC design demands.
“LABS by Xinyx is the Philippines’ first premium, flexible platform focused on IC design and microelectronics. It’s designed to close the skills gap that limits the growth of our semiconductor industry,” said Charade Avondo, president of Xinyx Design.
The launch aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s 2024 directive to prioritize semiconductor and electronics development. Despite high global demand, the local talent pool in IC Design remains limited, hindered by outdated curricula and scarce access to specialized training.
Avondo emphasized that Filipino engineers are already respected abroad for their creativity and resilience. “Filipino engineers are trusted leaders in R&D teams across the globe. It’s time we bring that innovation home,” she noted.
Steering Filipino talent toward IC design
IC design plays a pivotal role in AI, healthcare, renewable energy, automotive, defense, and beyond. By steering Filipino talent toward this crucial sector, LABS by Xinyx aims to elevate the Philippines from an electronics manufacturing center to a design-driven innovation powerhouse in the global semiconductor value chain.
The launch was attended by Muntinlupa City Mayor Ruffy Biazon, CDM President Dr. Teresita Fortuna, Department of Trade and Industry-Board of Investments director Corieh Dichosa, Tesda Deputy Director General Nelly Dillera, and representatives from the Private Sector Advisory Council, Asian Development Bank, and various academic institutions. —Ed: Corrie S.
