La Mesa Ecopark goes greener with renewable energy shift

In a landmark move toward environmental stewardship, the Manila Water Foundation (MWF) has transitioned the La Mesa Ecopark (LME) to renewable energy, strengthening its mission to champion sustainability and climate change mitigation.

The initiative, done through the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP) of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in partnership with Meralco, makes La Mesa Ecopark the first and largest ecological park in the country to adopt the program.

This milestone marks a new era of cleaner, more responsible energy use within one of Metro Manila’s last remaining green frontiers.

“This advancement underscores our unwavering commitment to sustainability, innovation, responsible energy use, and operational resilience,” said Reginald Andal, executive director of MWF.

A Milestone for renewable energy and resilience

The switching ceremony, held recently at La Mesa Ecopark, represents more than just a technical transition. It’s a testament to Manila Water’s vision of delivering world-class, community-responsive services that contribute to long-term sustainable development.

Through RAP, the facility now enjoys the flexibility to source power directly from renewable energy providers—reducing carbon emissions and ensuring stable, clean energy for its operations.

Empowering an Environmental Hub

The initiative also aligns with LME’s role as a hub for watershed conservation, forest protection, and biodiversity preservation. The 33-hectare park forms a vital segment of the La Mesa Watershed, which supplies water to over 90 percent of Metro Manila’s East Zone customers.

Recognizing its pioneering efforts, the ERC named La Mesa Ecopark a “RAP Champion.” According to ERC director for market operations service Sharon Montaner, Manila Water became the first company in the Philippines to adopt RAP in February 2025, sparking rapid adoption across industries—from education and banking to telecommunications and real estate.

“From just three aggregated groups in February, RAP has grown by 70 percent to 37 groups by August—proof of its success and impact,” Montaner noted. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
