In a time of global instability, rising economic pressure, and growing social isolation, young Filipinos are confronting an escalating mental health crisis head-on.

The AXA 2025 Mind Health Report reveals that Filipinos aged 18 to 34 experience significantly higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression than many of their global peers. This same group is also among the most proactive in seeking support through digital and AI-powered mental wellness tools.

Gen Z and Millennials: Struggling yet proactive

The AXA Mind Health Index—a central component of the annual report—divides people into four mental health categories: Flourishing, Getting by, Languishing, and Struggling.

Alarmingly, a large proportion of Filipino youth identify as either languishing or struggling, signaling the urgency of addressing mental health with modern, accessible solutions.

Compared to older generations and youth in other countries, Filipino Gen Zs and Millennials are more likely to be diagnosed with mental health conditions. However, they demonstrate a greater willingness to seek help.

The report reveals that 39 percent of young Filipinos turn to AI-powered mental health tools, compared to the global average of just 28 percent. Half of Filipino respondents also report using digital platforms like blogs, forums, websites, and social media as part of their mental wellness journey.

This digital-first approach shows both a cultural shift and a gap—underscoring the need for continued investment in online mental health tools, mobile access, and affordable care options.

Working-class Filipinos: Among the most stressed worldwide

Beyond the youth segment, stress remains a persistent national issue. Nearly seven out of 10 Filipinos report experiencing at least mild forms of anxiety, depression, or stress, placing the country among those with the highest stress levels globally.

Top stressors include:

  • Financial instability and job insecurity (76 percent)

  • Uncertainty about the future (70 percent)

  • Social isolation and loneliness (58 percent)

  • Climate change anxiety (57 percent)

  • Exposure to negative news (55 percent)

These figures are significantly higher than global averages and reflect broader societal pressures that affect mental health.

Creating a culture of early intervention

One of the key takeaways from the report is the importance of early intervention and non-diagnostic tools. AXA Philippines offers simple, reflective tools like the Mind Health Self-Check, which allows individuals to assess their mental state and take preventive action.

Moreover, some insurance providers now offer free mental health consultations and expanded coverage for select mental health conditions, reflecting a growing recognition that mental wellness is a core component of holistic health.

The role of workplaces

Workplaces have a crucial role to play in shaping mental health outcomes. According to AXA, creating psychologically safe work environments, encouraging mental health literacy, and promoting open conversations can reduce stigma and improve collective well-being.

“There’s still a long way to go, but we must remember that mental health is not just a personal issue—it’s a public one,” said AXA Philippines CEO Ayman Kandil. “With shared understanding and accessible tools, every Filipino has the potential to thrive.” —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
