Wilmar Philippines shifts to geothermal power with First Gen

Wilmar Edible Oils Philippines Inc., the local unit of multinational agribusiness group Wilmar International Limited, has marked a key milestone in its decarbonization efforts by shifting to geothermal energy through a partnership with First Gen Corp., the country’s leading renewable energy provider.

Advancing decarbonization goals

The move underscores Wilmar’s commitment to reducing operational emissions while ensuring reliable power supply for its manufacturing facilities.

“Our partnership with First Gen reinforces our commitment to responsible operations and climate action, while ensuring reliable power supply to support our operations,” David Lim, chief financial officer of Wilmar Edible Oils Philippines Inc., said in a statement.

“Since energy is typically one of the major sources of operational emissions, shifting to renewable energy offers a practical, measurable way to reduce environmental impact while supporting long-term business continuity and cost stability.”

Geothermal supply deal

Under a supply agreement signed on Jan. 21, 2026, First Gen will provide geothermal energy sourced from the Mt. Apo geothermal plant in Cotabato to power Wilmar’s 24/7 processing facility in Gingoog, Misamis Oriental. The facility handles copra crushing as well as the processing and refining of edible oils.

“Geothermal power is the only renewable energy source with baseload capability that can support the electricity demand of industries while ensuring a reduction in carbon footprint,” said Carlo Vega, chief customer engagement officer of First Gen. “We remain committed to supporting Wilmar as it continues to embed sustainability across its operations in the Philippines.”

Expanding energy portfolio

First Gen currently has more than 1,700 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity from over 22 geothermal, wind, solar, and hydro facilities nationwide.

To help ensure energy supply and security and address the intermittence of renewable energy, First Gen also holds a 40-percent interest in four gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 2,017 MW, in partnership with majority owner Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc.

Over the next five years, First Gen aims to significantly expand its portfolio of renewable and low-carbon power generating facilities, targeting total capacity growth to 13 gigawatts as part of its long-term transition strategy. —Ed: Corrie  S. Narisma
