QUICK LOOK: Philippine unemployment rate rose to 3.9% in October

The country's jobless rate climbed to 3.9 percent in October 2024 from 3.7 percent in September, but remained lower than the 4.2 percent recorded in October 2023, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

  • Employment rate:

    • Increased to 96.1 percent in October 2024 from 95.8 percent in October 2023, but lower than the 96.3 percent in September 2024

    • Total employed persons rose to 48.16 million from 47.79 million in October 2023

  • Unemployed Filipinos:

    • Total unemployed individuals decreased to 1.97 million from 2.09 million in October 2023

  • Labor force participation rate:

    • Decreased to 63.3 percent in October 2024 from 63.9 percent in October 2023

    • Total labor force size was 50.12 million

  • Underemployment rate:

    • Increased to 12.6 percent in October 2024 from 11.7 percent in October 2023

    • 6.08 million employed persons sought additional work or hours

  • Average hours worked:

    • Slightly decreased to 41 hours per week from 41.2 hours in October 2023

  • Key employment sectors:

    • Services accounted for 61 percent of total employment, agriculture for 21.2 percent, and industry for 17.9 percent

  • Top sub-sectors with employment growth (annual):

    • Administrative and support service activities (+247K)

    • Accommodation and food services (+215K)

    • Transportation and storage (+202K)

  • Sub-sectors that posted employment declines (annual):

    • Fishing and aquaculture (-213K)

    • Wholesale and retail trade (-212K)

    • Agriculture and forestry (-183K)

  • Regional unemployment rates:

    • Highest: Region IV-A (Calabarzon) at 5.7 percent

    • Lowest: Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) at 2.3 percent
