Pru Life UK boosts climate resilience, water security in Bantayan

Leading life insurer Pru Life UK has reinforced its long-term commitment to communities in Bantayan Island, Cebu through “Ulan Alang sa Bantayan,” its climate resilience initiative, alongside its annual gift-giving activity.

Launched in 2024, Ulan Alang sa Bantayan focuses on helping vulnerable island communities prepare for the impacts of climate change, particularly in ensuring access to safe and sustainable water sources.

The program is part of the company’s broader climate and health advocacy.

Water security focus

In its pilot year, Pru Life UK donated two rainwater harvesting systems to its adopted communities on Bantayan Island, providing a reliable 2,000-liter supply of clean water to more than 500 families.

The initiative aimed to address recurring water shortages experienced by residents, especially during dry seasons.

To ensure sustainability, the company also conducted training sessions on the proper use and maintenance of the systems, empowering residents to manage and protect their water supply over the long term.

Training, gift-giving

This year, Pru Life UK expanded the program by facilitating Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) training sessions and distributing gift packs as part of its annual outreach tradition. The activities were designed to promote healthier hygiene practices while continuing to foster goodwill within the communities.

The company also conducted a pilot run of a new financial literacy program for adults, developed by Prudence Foundation—the community investment arm of Prudential plc—to help residents strengthen their financial knowledge and resilience.

Community impact felt

Rolly Giducos, a community leader from Barangay Maricaban in Santa Fe, Bantayan Island, said the WASH program has made a significant difference in daily life.

“For me, the WASH program has a huge impact, especially when it comes to water because water gives life to all of us,” Giducos said, noting that improved access to clean water supports both personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness.

“When we are clean, our surroundings are also clean,” he added.

Roots in Yolanda

Pru Life UK’s engagement with Bantayan Island began through a multi-year partnership between Prudence Foundation and Habitat for Humanity Philippines, which helped rebuild homes destroyed by Super Typhoon Yolanda.

After the housing project ended in 2017, the company continued its annual outreach, which eventually evolved into the Ulan Alang sa Bantayan program.

The initiative was developed in collaboration with the Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST).

Commitment sustained

“Our work in Bantayan reflects our belief that progress is built through trust and shared responsibility,” said Calvin Kohchet-Chua, Pru Life UK’s chief legal, government relations, and sustainability officer.

“As Ulan Alang sa Bantayan grows, so does our dedication to helping communities prepare for the future with confidence and security.”
