The Philippine General Hospital (PGH) has commenced construction of a 16-story Pediatric and Adult Specialty Center, signaling a significant expansion of public healthcare capacity in the country.

The P675.5-million project is located within the PGH complex in Manila and is scheduled for completion in 2027. The integrated facility will house 450 beds, intensive care units, modern pediatric emergency and operating rooms, and outpatient clinics. It will also support auxiliary services, including a centralized dietary department, dormitories, dining halls, a canteen, and a 300-seat convention center.

“This new Specialty Center reflects our unwavering commitment to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure,” said PGH director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi. “It will allow us to better serve patients who rely on PGH for complex and urgent medical needs.”

The project is part of the government’s broader push to improve healthcare access and modernize existing institutions under the universal healthcare framework.

“This is a vital step in achieving equitable access to quality care,” said Health Secretary Dr. Teodoro Herbosa.

Attending the groundbreaking were First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, along with senior officials including Secretary Herbosa, Public Works and Highways Secretary Engr. Manuel Bonoan, Manila Mayor Dr. Honey Lacuna-Pangan, UP President Atty. Angelo Jimenez, and UP Manila Chancellor Dr. Michael Tee.

The new specialty center is backed by the University of the Philippines System. PGH, the country’s largest public hospital, serves over 600,000 patients annually, many of whom are indigent and depend on state-subsidized care.

Once operational, the facility is expected to expand PGH’s ability to deliver advanced medical services under one roof.
