Meralco steps up zero waste drive via Plastic Flamingo partnership

Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has forged a new sustainability partnership with Plastic Flamingo Philippines Inc. (PLAF), a French social enterprise, to upcycle its plastic waste into usable construction materials and furniture.

Under a memorandum of agreement signed between the two parties, Meralco will turn over collected plastic waste from its facilities to PLAF, which specializes in transforming discarded plastic into eco-friendly alternatives to traditional building products.

A circular collaboration

“Proper waste management is only the beginning,” said Jerry B. Lao, Meralco vice president and head of facilities and safety management. “Real sustainability is finding ways to convert waste into something that benefits both the environment and the communities around us.”

The initiative supports Meralco’s Race to Zero Waste program, launched in 2020, which has significantly reduced the company’s waste footprint. According to the company, its waste diversion rate rose to 95 percent in 2024, up from just 17 percent prior to its ban on single-use plastics in 2019.

From waste to worth

“With PLAF’s help, we are turning our plastic waste into useful materials—diverting them away from landfills and oceans, and contributing to a circular economy,” said Ronnie L. Aperocho, Meralco EVP and chief operating officer.

PLAF also highlighted the broader value of corporate partnerships in addressing environmental challenges. “By working together, we are setting an example of how corporations can lead the way in environmental stewardship and fostering circular economy practices,” said PLAF partnerships and operations manager Krisha G. Rubia.

The agreement is part of Meralco’s broader sustainability agenda, “Powering the Good Life,” which is anchored on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and built on four pillars: Power, Planet, People, and Prosperity.

Sustainability at the core

“A key driver of (Race to Zero Waste’s) success was our groundbreaking ban on single-use plastics. This partnership with PLAF builds on that achievement, translating our efforts into real, measurable impact for both people and the planet,” said Raymond B. Ravelo, Meralco first vice president and chief sustainability officer.
