A significant drop in rice prices was observed during a market inspection led by Agriculture Assistant Secretary for Consumer Affairs Genevieve Velicaria-Guevarra on Sept. 11, 2024, the department said Thursday.

The visit, joined by House Speaker Martin Romualdez, ACT-CIS Representative Erwin Tulfo, and Philippine Rice Industry stakeholders Movement (PRISM) officials, revealed well-milled rice being sold as low as P45 per kilo at Guadalupe Market, Farmers Market, and Nepa Q Mart.

According to Orly Manuntag of PRISM, the price reduction is linked to the tariff decrease on imported rice from 35 percent to 15 percent.

"Retailers and consumers are pleased, as they can now expect rice priced between P42 and P45 per kilo," he added.

Romualdez praised the development, reaffirming the administration’s focus on food security.

Meanwhile, Guevarra highlighted efforts under Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., to further stabilize prices by increasing agricultural production through additional farm inputs.

This price decrease follows President Marcos’ Executive Order 62, issued in July, which reduced rice tariffs.

The Department of Agriculture also expanded its P29 Rice Program and launched the “Rice-for-All” initiative, aiming to provide affordable rice at P45 per kilo to all Filipinos through Kadiwa sites.
