Launched by Google.org in collaboration with AVPN and backed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the AI Opportunity Fund allocates $27 million to 49 organizations across 15 countries. Its goal: train over 720,000 workers and 100,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in AI skills, ensuring equitable access to emerging technologies.
Hapinoy, known for championing Filipino microentrepreneurs—especially women—through training, digital tools, financing, and supply chain access, is a natural fit for the program’s mission of inclusive digital transformation, Google said in a statement.
“Through AVPN’s AI Opportunity Fund, we aim to empower sari-sari storeowners with practical AI tools that can transform their microbusinesses and uplift their families,” said a Hapinoy representative. “Our ‘High-Tech’ meets ‘High-Touch’ approach blends digital platforms with in-person community training, ensuring AI is both accessible and meaningful in day-to-day store operations.”
The AI-powered training will enable storeowners to optimize operations, improve inventory and financial management, and identify new growth avenues using AI-driven tools and insights.
Sanjay Gupta, president of Google Asia Pacific, emphasized the importance of inclusion: “A shift towards an AI-powered economy needs to be fair and inclusive. Through the Google.org AI Opportunity Fund and our collaborations, we’re committed to ensuring everyone can benefit from the potential of AI.”
This initiative builds upon Google.org’s broader commitment to digital equity and economic empowerment across the region. For Hapinoy and thousands of sari-sari storeowners, it’s a leap into the future—one where technology drives not just profit, but also social impact. — Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
