That unpredictability is shaping what people may look for in everyday accessories, including watches that can withstand rain and the bumps of daily travel while remaining practical enough for work and other activities.
Casio Philippines is highlighting five G-SHOCK models aimed at commuters, combining the brand’s rugged construction with features such as long battery life, illumination, timers and easy-to-read displays.
All five watches come with 200-meter water resistance and G-SHOCK’s shock-resistant construction, making them suitable for commuters who regularly face changing weather and crowded trains, jeepneys and other forms of public transport, the company said in a statement.
Built for the commute
“Filipino commuters deal with a lot in a single day, whether it’s a sudden downpour or a train car that feels like an oven,” said Casio Philippines regional sales manager Sena Kuroda.
“G-SHOCK was built for exactly that kind of unpredictability. Commuters shouldn't have to choose between a watch that can keep up and one that looks good doing it.”
The models offer different combinations of style and functionality, ranging from retro-inspired analog-digital watches to large digital displays designed for quick reading while on the move.
The GA-140-1A1, priced at P8,860, takes its design cues from the boomboxes and portable stereos of the 1980s and 1990s. It retains the oversized case associated with the GA-100 line while giving the watch a retro streetwear look.
For commuters who prefer a larger, more pronounced design, the P7,920 GA-700-1A has a three-dimensional face and sculpted hands intended to improve readability. It has a five-year battery and a front button that provides quick access to illumination in dark or low-light conditions.
Longer battery life
Two other models put greater emphasis on battery longevity.
The GA-010-1A, priced at P7,770, and the P7,960 GD-010-1 both have batteries designed to last about 10 years, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
Both use bio-based resin and come in black colorways suited to casual and office settings. A front button activates a high-brightness LED for easier viewing.
The main difference lies in their displays. The GA-010-1A uses a textured analog-digital dial, while the GD-010-1 features a large digital display designed for quick readability.
The fifth model, the P8,870 GA-100-1A1, offers a blacked-out design with four digital displays and aluminum hands. It also has high magnetic resistance, intended to protect the watch from magnetic fields encountered around electronic devices.
Everyday function
Beyond their individual designs, the watches share features geared toward everyday use, including water and shock resistance, illumination and timekeeping functions that can be useful during long or irregular commutes.
The lineup also illustrates how watches designed around durability are increasingly being positioned as everyday accessories rather than equipment reserved for outdoor or high-impact activities.
