Don’t get duped: SEC and BDO show how to spot scam red flags

When an investment opportunity sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Unfortunately, distinguishing legitimate ventures from fraudulent schemes has become increasingly difficult, as scammers grow more sophisticated by the day.

This is the challenge the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and BDO Foundation aim to tackle together through the release of two engaging videos that promote investor awareness.

Titled “Check with SEC” and Legit Investments? It’s a Date,” the short films serve as a timely reminder for the public to be vigilant and discerning when evaluating investment opportunities. These videos underscore the message that when something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The music video “Check with SEC” uses catchy lyrics and vibrant visuals to highlight common red flags in fraudulent investment schemes. Among the warning signs are promises of unusually high returns—such as doubling one’s money in a month—bonus incentives for recruiting new investors, and requests to transfer funds to a personal bank account.

On the other hand, “Legit Investments? It’s a Date” follows a fictional character named Aldea as she explores three different investment offers. The story emphasizes the importance of conducting due diligence, asking the right questions, and verifying official documents. Aldea learns that even if a company is registered with the SEC, it may still lack the necessary license to offer or sell securities.

Some of the key documents investors should ask for include the permit to sell securities, an order of registration, a prospectus, and the salesman’s certificate. The videos stress the importance of validating these through proper authorities, particularly the SEC.

Currently available on the SEC’s official Facebook page, the videos will also be featured on other SEC platforms and the BDO Foundation’s YouTube playlist. They are set to become integral tools in nationwide training seminars and on-ground awareness campaigns.
