Tech-driven solutions take center stage at Asia-Pacific disaster risk reduction conference

The Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) 2024 will highlight the transformative role of cutting-edge technologies such as satellites, drones, and artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing disaster risk reduction.

Set for Oct. 14 to 18 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, the event will delve into how these tools can improve disaster prediction, preparedness, and response efforts.

AI has become indispensable in achieving resilience amid the growing frequency of disasters.

In a statement, Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga emphasized the importance of technological integration, stating,  “As climate change intensifies disaster risks, integrating technologies like AI and space-based systems into our DRR strategies is vital for a safer, more resilient future."

"APMCDRR serves as a platform for collaboration on solutions that protect both people and the environment," she added.

In the Philippines, AI-powered initiatives, such as the GeoRisk Philippines project led by PHIVOLCS and funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), have already advanced disaster management.

This multi-agency effort provides platforms to share critical hazard and risk information, helping communities and local governments reduce vulnerability to natural hazards.

Led by Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum and Professor Saini Yang of the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR), the conference will spotlight how AI, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and satellite technologies can improve weather forecasts and risk assessments.

These innovations, in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, will enhance efforts to protect lives and livelihoods.

The event will also explore blending modern technology with traditional practices and nature-based solutions to safeguard ecosystems, a crucial issue for the Philippines.
