Security Bank, DLSU turn science lessons into community solutions

Insider Spotlight

  • 29 science teachers trained to turn research into practical community solutions
  • Projects will tackle local challenges in the environment, livelihood, and health
  • Teachers will showcase results in 2027, highlighting the impact of their projects

Science teachers across the Philippines are preparing to take on a bigger role beyond the classroom—using research to solve everyday problems affecting their communities.

Security Bank Foundation and De La Salle University are helping make that happen, with 29 junior high school science master teachers completing their third year of training under the Mentoring Future Leaders for Nation-Building Program for Science Teachers.

Turning knowledge into action

Rather than focusing solely on teaching methods, the latest training at De La Salle University-Dasmariñas pushed educators to identify community problems and develop science-based responses.

Participants proposed projects addressing environmental sustainability, livelihood development, and health education, according to a company release from Security Bank.

The program also emphasized working with parents, local government units, and other stakeholders to ensure research projects address actual community needs.

Beyond textbooks and laboratories

"The most meaningful learning happens when science is connected to people's lives," Security Bank Foundation chairman Rafael Simpao Jr. said.

"By helping teachers understand their communities more deeply, we enable them to develop solutions that are relevant, practical, and sustainable."

The initiative builds on earlier improvements in participating schools, including enhanced science laboratories, stronger teacher mentoring, and improved student learning outcomes.

But the next phase presents a different challenge—turning research proposals into initiatives that deliver measurable benefits outside school grounds.

Teachers will receive continued support through online coaching and learning sessions as they begin implementing their projects.

The real test comes in 2027

"To understand people's hearts, look at what they dream of becoming, what they struggle with, what brings them joy, and what they value," Simpao said.

"When you understand these, you often discover the way to create meaningful impact."

The program concludes in 2027, when participating teachers will present their project results and demonstrate contributions to learning outcomes, teacher leadership, and community resilience.

For Security Bank Foundation and De La Salle University, that milestone will help establish whether investing in science educators can deliver benefits extending beyond improved classroom instruction.

The 2027 milestone will put the spotlight on how teacher-led research can translate into practical improvements in education and community life, extending the value of science learning well beyond school grounds. —Princess Daisy C. Ominga | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
