Project MITHI takes root: Security Bank begins mangrove initiative in La Union

In celebration of World Ocean Month, Security Bank launched the first phase of Project MITHI (Mangrove-Based Initiatives for Thriving Habitats and Inclusive Communities) by planting 940 native mangrove seedlings in Aringay, La Union.

The project, which aims to plant a total of 10,000 seedlings, seeks to bolster coastal ecosystems and strengthen community resilience against climate change.

The volunteer-driven event was held in collaboration with the Dulao Fishpond and Fishpen Producers Cooperative, Oceanus Conservation, and Communities for Nature, with support from the Aringay local government.

More than 40 Security Bank employees participated, alongside Aringay local government officials.

“Project MITHI brings our sustainability vision to life—protecting the environment, supporting livelihoods, and strengthening communities. It reflects Security Bank’s commitment to advancing climate action and enriching lives through measurable impact,” said Eduardo Olbes, EVP and CFO of Security Bank.

Camille Rivera-Roa, director and co-founder of Oceanus Conservation, emphasized the role of biodiversity: “We’re planting three native species—Rhizophora, Lumnitzera, and Avicennia. A diverse mix strengthens mangrove resilience and supports a more stable ecosystem, making the forest less vulnerable to disease and environmental change.”

Beyond its ecological benefits, Project MITHI also boosts local livelihoods. The Dulao Cooperative and Oceanus Conservation will lead continued site maintenance and monitoring—ensuring long-term environmental and economic impact.

Security Bank employee Wilfreda Garca, from the Dagupan-Lucao Branch, shared how the initiative inspired her to revive mangrove planting in her own hometown, where native forests had been displaced by coastal development.

Designed for long-term success, Project MITHI includes site assessments, species suitability, and survivability planning—aligning with Security Bank’s broader sustainability goals and mission to empower resilient communities. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
