Trade milestone
The agreement marks a significant step in the Philippines' trade strategy as the two countries celebrate the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026. It reflects their shared commitment to strengthening economic ties and broadening opportunities for businesses and investors.
Trade Secretary Cristina Roque welcomed the completion of the negotiations during her meeting with Chilean Foreign Affairs Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna.
Roque said the agreement supports the Marcos administration's goal of expanding the country's network of high-quality trade agreements while creating more opportunities for Filipino businesses, workers, farmers, consumers and investors.
Broader scope
Beyond reducing tariffs, the PH–CL CEPA establishes a framework for deeper cooperation in trade, investment and the digital economy. It also includes commitments on sustainability, labor, global value chains, gender and economic resilience.
The agreement builds on the complementary strengths of the two economies. The Philippines exports electronic products, coconut products and personal care items to Chile, while importing copper ores and concentrates, salmon and other products.
A reliable supply of copper is expected to support the Philippines' semiconductor, electronics, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing industries.
Growing ties
The government said the agreement will open more opportunities for collaboration in value chains, technology exchange, investments and sustainable business practices.
Trade between the two countries has continued to expand. In 2025, Chile ranked as the Philippines' 51st trading partner, 49th export market and 48th import source, underscoring the growing importance of economic relations between the two nations. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
