Local farmers thrive with big support from the SM Weekend Market

The SM Group is transforming local commerce through the SM Weekend Market, a partnership between SM Foundation and SM Supermalls, aiming to integrate local producers into the retail ecosystem.

At its core are the micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) that form the backbone of the economy.

Huge impact

“The SM Weekend Market provides MSMEs with strategic venues to showcase their products and engage directly with consumers,” Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls, said in a statement.

Since its inception, the market has welcomed over 100 local farmers, providing them a platform to connect with a diverse range of customers, from weekend shoppers to mall employees and tenants.

This exposure has not only expanded their market reach but also significantly lifted their earnings.

“Our goal is to transfer modern, science-based agri-technology skillsets to our farmers. Once equipped with these advanced skills and knowledge, we link them to the available market,” said Cristie Angeles, assistant vice president of SM Foundation.

Teaching sustainable growth

Helping drive this initiative is SM Foundation’s Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan – Sustainable Livelihood Program (KSK-SLP).

The 14-week program equips participants with essential skills in agriculture, business management, and market readiness.

Through training in sustainable farming and mentorship on product presentation and pricing, KSK-SLP prepares entrepreneurs to thrive in competitive markets.

A farmer levels up his craft

Success stories include that of Francisco “Ka Iko” Vispo, a 62-year-old farmer from Laguna.

He completed the KSK-SLP in 2018, increasing his farm’s productivity while growing his business via the SM Weekend Market at SM Calamba.

His extra income enabled him to buy a second-hand tricycle, improving product delivery and business operations.

He also shares his agricultural knowledge, promotes sustainable farming, and supports a community garden feeding school children, showing his commitment to community upliftment.

Partnerhips

The success of the SM Weekend Market and KSK-SLP is bolstered by partnerships with organizations like TESDA, Department of Agriculture, DSWD, DOST, DTI, and local government units. These collaborations enhance program delivery, foster innovation, and ensure long-term sustainability.

Local farmers, actively involved in the SM Weekend Market, attribute their improved profitability to the market’s support and opportunities.
