La Campana Fabrica de Tabacos, one of the country’s oldest family-owned enterprises, marked its 80th anniversary last night with a forward-looking message from family head Caesar Wongchuking.

“It is a great honor for me to deliver the opening remarks at this historic gathering for our company,” he told guests during the event on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025.

He opened his speech by recalling the loss of matriarch Nelia and brother Alex in recent years, crediting them with guiding the group through its growth phase.

“They guided me and gave their full trust in managing La Campana and Mighty Corp. over the past 25 years of progress in our companies,” he said.

The head of the family business has now set his sights on an aggressive expansion in real estate and related businesses.

From tobacco to diversification

Founded by Wong Chu King in 1945, La Campana started as a cigarette maker before becoming one of the world’s biggest independent tobacco companies under the stewardship of Nelia Wongchuking.

“My father built the company from pure grit and perseverance. He relied on his instinct and Faith to be able to carry the company to the 1980s,” Caesar said. “Though our tobacco days are past us now, we continue to pay homage not only to where we came from, but also to the people who were with us through thick or thin.”

Next generation plans

Wongchuking underscored the family’s commitment to transition La Campana into a diversified group anchored on its real estate assets.

“We will build on and maximize the real estate holdings of our company. We currently have over 180 hectares of industrial, commercial and agricultural developments,” he said.

Ongoing expansion operations cover logistics infrastructure, cold and dry warehousing, and port operations.

Legacy and continuity

The anniversary, he added, is both a look back and a step forward. “As we transition our company from our generation to the next, we continue to nurture and embrace the values that were instilled by our parents,” Wongchuking said.

He closed the speech with gratitude: “This night is for all of you. Thank you for your friendship, and your continued faith in the leadership of our company.”
