The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) successfully wrapped up its Trade Education and Advocacy (TEA) Campaign for the Marikina footwear industry on Dec. 12, reinforcing its dedication to empowering local industries and maximizing the benefits of free trade agreements (FTAs).

Held in Marikina, known as the “Shoe Capital of the Philippines,” the campaign aimed to equip manufacturers, artisans, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and exporters with critical knowledge and tools to thrive in global markets.

Participants were introduced to the advantages of FTAs, such as in sourcing more affordable raw materials and accessing preferential export markets. The campaign also discussed trade remedies like safeguards and anti-dumping measures for protection against unfair trade practices.

Topics covered included opportunities for the Philippine footwear industry under FTAs, market access to the European Union, intellectual property protection, export procedures, and rules of origin.

In his keynote address, Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel emphasized the unprecedented opportunities FTAs bring to Philippine-made products, particularly footwear, showcasing the country’s manufacturing excellence. He expressed optimism that these agreements could propel the industry to new heights, not just in Marikina but nationwide.

Bureau of Import Services Director Maria Guiza Lim underscored the cultural and economic significance of the Marikina footwear industry, describing it as both a legacy and a driver of international growth. With the global footwear market expanding, she highlighted the Philippines’ potential to capture a significant market share.

The TEA Campaign is part of the DTI’s larger initiative to strengthen local industries’ export competencies, aligning with the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 and the Philippine Export Development Plan 2023-2028. The program featured participation from several government agencies and the ARISE+ PH Project, emphasizing a collective effort to position the Philippines as a leading export hub in key industries. -- Ed: CSN
