Digital spending surge propels UnionBank to Visa leadership

Insider Spotlight

  • UnionBank recorded the highest Visa credit payment volume in the Philippines in 2025
  • The bank recently reached two million credit cards in circulation
  • Cardholders are increasingly using credit cards for groceries, online purchases, electronics, travel, and other everyday spending needs

Union Bank of the Philippines emerged as the top issuer for Visa credit payment volume in the Philippines in 2025, underscoring the growing role of credit cards in everyday consumer spending and financial management.

The milestone reflects a broader shift among Filipinos toward digital-first payment habits as households seek more flexible ways to manage budgets, make purchases, and access financial tools.

UnionBank said consumers are increasingly relying on credit cards for essentials such as groceries, electronics, and online shopping.

Why it matters

The achievement highlights the continued expansion of cashless transactions in the country, with consumers embracing secure payment methods that offer installment options, cashback rewards, and merchant discounts.

“As more Filipinos become mindful of how they manage their budgets, this recognition highlights the growing importance of secure and flexible payment options in daily life,” UnionBank head of cards and loans Mukul Sukhani said in a press statement.

“Our focus has always been to support customers with practical benefits—whether for essentials, online purchases, or occasional lifestyle experiences—so they can make the most of how they spend,” Sukhani added.

Visa also pointed to rising demand for seamless digital payment experiences across different spending categories.

“From everyday essentials to important life moments, Visa enables fast, secure, and seamless digital payments,” Visa Philippines country manager Jeffrey Navarro said.

“UnionBank Visa Cardholders benefit from a global network that helps them transact with confidence—whether in-store, online, or abroad,” Navarro added.

The bigger picture

Earlier this year, UnionBank reached two million credit cards in circulation, a milestone the bank attributed to digital onboarding initiatives and simplified application processes designed to broaden access to credit.

The lender said its Visa credit cards offer dining, e-commerce, travel, and accommodation benefits, including discounts, installment plans, airfare promotions, and hotel deals.

These incentives are aimed at helping consumers maximize value from both essential purchases and lifestyle spending.

As digital payments continue to gain traction, UnionBank’s latest milestone positions the bank to benefit from increasing consumer demand for convenient and flexible financial solutions. —Vanessa Hidalgo| Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
