Digital responsibility vital to safeguarding freedom online

With digital platforms now deeply integrated into daily life, experts warn that online risks such as phishing scams, identity theft, fraud, and disinformation continue to expose users to financial losses, privacy breaches, and manipulation.

Advocates are calling for greater digital responsibility to help protect users from threats ranging from misinformation to cybercrime.

The call comes as the country marks Independence Day, prompting renewed discussions on how freedom should be understood and safeguarded in an increasingly connected world.

Digital freedom

Digital safety advocates say true freedom in the digital age extends beyond internet access and technological opportunities.

It also means having the confidence to navigate online spaces safely, without fear of being deceived, exploited or harmed.

Protecting digital freedoms, they said, requires responsible online behavior, including verifying information before sharing it, safeguarding personal data and helping create safer online communities.

At the center of this effort is the concept of "digital bayanihan," a modern adaptation of the Filipino value of communal cooperation and mutual assistance.

Digital bayanihan encourages internet users to take collective responsibility for online safety by promoting accurate information, protecting vulnerable users and reporting harmful content.

"A truly free digital space is not one where people can say anything without consequence, but one where every Filipino can participate safely, responsibly and meaningfully," advocates said in a statement.

Collective effort

Digital safety advocates stress that even simple online actions can have far-reaching consequences.

A single misleading social media post can spread panic, while clicking or sharing a malicious link can expose unsuspecting users to scams and financial losses.

To help strengthen digital resilience, experts recommend several practical measures, including verifying sources before reposting content, using strong passwords and two-factor authentication, and never sharing one-time passwords or personal credentials.

They also encourage internet users to assist senior citizens, children and first-time internet users in recognizing suspicious links, fake promotions and online impersonation schemes.

Reporting fake accounts, scams and misleading content is likewise seen as an important step in improving the online environment.

Youth leaders

Young Filipinos are being encouraged to take a leading role in promoting responsible digital citizenship.

As digital natives, students and members of Generation Z are viewed as well-positioned to influence online behavior and help foster safer internet communities, PLDT Home said in a company release.

Supporting this effort is Online AlerTour, an educational initiative under PLDT Home's Online Alerto program in partnership with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group.

The campaign brings online safety education directly to universities, equipping students with skills to identify cyber threats, combat disinformation and promote responsible online conduct.

The initiative has already visited several campuses, including Far Eastern University, Universidad de Manila and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

Organizers said the program aims to empower students to become advocates of online safety within their schools and communities.

Long-term vision

Online AlerTour forms part of the broader Online Alerto initiative, PLDT Home's online safety advocacy platform launched in 2022.

The platform has since grown into a Facebook community with more than 77,000 members focused on promoting digital awareness, responsibility and cybersecurity.

PLDT Home said it will continue working with stakeholders through education programs, partnerships and community-based initiatives to help create a safer digital environment.
