Building Carmen’s Best from surplus dairy milk taught Francisco “Paco” D. Magsaysay that entrepreneurship is only part of a broader journey shaped by resilience, family, purpose and the choices made through setbacks.

Magsaysay is putting those experiences into a new book, Beyond the Scoop: The Carmen’s Best Story, which will be available starting October at Fully Booked outlets nationwide and later through Amazon, Lazada and Shopee.

Growth pains

The book frames the growth of Carmen’s Best not simply as a brand-building story, but as a collection of lessons about perseverance, adaptability, integrity and maintaining quality while navigating the growing pains of a business.

“Business is just one chapter of life,” Magsaysay said in a press statement.

Personal commitment

Magsaysay entered entrepreneurship after his father, former Sen. Ramon “Jun” Magsaysay Jr., challenged him to find a productive use for surplus milk from the family dairy farm.

Despite having no food-business experience, Magsaysay experimented with ice cream and eventually developed Carmen’s Best, naming the brand after his only daughter. Using her name became a personal commitment to maintaining product quality.

Started with a conversation

The idea emerged from Magsaysay’s conversations with multi-awarded executive coach Anda del Rosario, who believed his experiences and reflections could resonate with a wider audience.

Del Rosario encouraged an initially hesitant Magsaysay to tell his story and helped bring the project to life. Veteran business editor Tina Arceo-Dumlao and award-winning fictionist Vida Cruz-Borja joined at different stages and eventually became the book’s editors.

Entrepreneurship lessons

Magsaysay studied Marketing with a minor in Philosophy at the University of St. Thomas in Houston and later earned a Master in Entrepreneurship degree from the Asian Institute of Management. He also trained in ice cream making at Pennsylvania State University.

Beyond Carmen’s Best and his other ventures, Magsaysay now shares entrepreneurship lessons through leadership workshops and an online video course. The course is available through www.pacomagsaysay.com.  —Vanessa Hidalgo | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
