BPI launches reverse vending machine, turns waste into VYBE points

Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has become the first bank in the Philippines to install a reverse vending machine (RVM) in the workplace, reinforcing its push for sustainability and integrating eco-friendly practices into daily operations.

The RVM is central to BPI’s new “Turn Waste Into Points” program, which rewards employees and guests for recycling clean, empty PET bottles and aluminum cans. Located at The Fifth in BPI Buendia Center (BBC), Makati City, the machine accepts recyclables with labels intact, awarding users BPI Rewards Points redeemable via the VYBE by BPI app.

“This initiative is a reflection of how we walk the talk when it comes to sustainability,” said Cathy Santamaria, BPI chief customer and marketing officer. “We are encouraging every BPI employee and guest to make recycling a habit—by making it simple, convenient, and rewarding.”

How it works

  • Users insert eligible plastic bottles or aluminum cans into the RVM.

  • The machine credits BPI Rewards Points, which can be used for vouchers and other perks through VYBE.

  • Collected recyclables are sold to recycling facilities and upcycled into products like t-shirts, eco-bricks, chairs, and tables.

The RVM, supplied by Spurway Enterprises, supports BPI’s workplace waste management program and promotes the circular economy—keeping materials in use and out of landfills.

Why it matters

PET bottle waste at BBC averages 20 kilograms a month, or roughly 500 half-liter bottles, each taking 450 to 1,000 years to decompose. By diverting even a portion of this waste, BPI aims to significantly reduce its environmental footprint.

The program also promotes employee engagement in sustainability by linking environmental action with tangible rewards.

Campaign timeline

The “Turn Waste Into Points” campaign will run until Sept. 24, 2025. BPI says this initiative reflects its long-term environmental commitment and belief that small, meaningful actions can add up to big change.

By merging sustainability, technology, and employee engagement, BPI said its  RVM program shows how companies can integrate environmental responsibility into everyday corporate culture. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
