The election was held during the IMC’s annual meeting in Brussels, Belgium, where leaders from the world’s top financial institutions convened to discuss emerging challenges and innovations in global banking.
Established in 1954, the IMC is an exclusive non-profit forum composed of chairpersons and CEOs from 58 major financial institutions in 31 countries. It serves as a high-level venue for confidential dialogue among commercial bank leaders, central bank governors, policymakers, and senior executives from global financial institutions including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
Tan’s election follows a line of distinguished predecessors, including Johan Thijs of Belgium’s KBC Group (2024–2025), Carlos Torres Vila of Spain’s BBVA (2023–2024), and John Dugan of the United States’ Citigroup Inc. (2022–2023).
His appointment underscores BDO’s growing regional and global influence and highlights the Philippines’ emergence as a key player in the global financial community. It also affirms Tan’s extensive banking expertise and the international community’s confidence in his leadership.
“This milestone not only honors Mr. Tan’s personal achievements but also reflects the strength and reputation of the Philippine banking industry,” BDO said in a statement.
Tan’s tenure is expected to enhance the visibility of Southeast Asian financial institutions and foster broader collaboration across international banking networks. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
