The capability gained fresh validation after six Filipino Toyota workers won medals across every category entered at the Toyota 2026 Asia Pacific Skills Contest, marking TMP’s first complete podium sweep since joining the annual competition in 2006. The contest was held at Toyota Motor Thailand’s Ban Pho Plant in Chachoengsao Province.
More than 1.2 million vehicles
The results connect shopfloor skills with Toyota’s expanding Philippine manufacturing footprint. TMP has produced more than 1.2 million vehicles locally, with its Santa Rosa facility now capable of making over 60,000 units annually across the Vios, Innova and Next Generation Tamaraw.
Six-medal haul
Christian Cobilla, competing in Painting–Team Leader, and Wilmer Penalla in Logistics–Team Member secured silver medals. Noel Elpos, Edwin Bocaya, Loreto Muyna and Ramel Sarmiento earned bronze medals across Logistics, Assembly, Quality Control and Welding.
The six-medal haul lifted TMP’s cumulative tally at the regional competition to 14 medals since 2006, including its fourth gold medal in 2025.
PH as fourth largest market in Asia
Toyota describes the Philippines as its fourth-largest market in Asia. The latest showing points to another competitive asset: manufacturing talent trained in shopfloor disciplines anchored on the Toyota Production System. The regional contest brings together line team members and leaders from Toyota affiliates across Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Pakistan and India.
Beyond conventional vehicle assembly
TMP is broadening the work performed locally. Its in-house vehicle conversion facility can turn the Next Generation Tamaraw into six body configurations, creating opportunities for Filipino vehicle designers, engineers, parts suppliers and body builders.
That capability extends beyond conventional vehicle assembly into locally relevant applications, including utility vans and ambulances.
Workforce advantage
For Toyota, Filipino manufacturing skill is becoming more than a workforce advantage. Combined with higher production capability and vehicle conversion, it gives the Philippine operation a deeper role in the automaker’s regional manufacturing network. —Vanessa Hidalgo| Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
