Insider Spotlight
The effort adds timely significance to a season when thousands gather in the iconic structure for Christmas devotions.
Why it matters
The UP Chapel stands as a landmark of modern Philippine architecture and spiritual life. Designed by National Artist Leandro Locsin with structural engineering by Engr. Alfredo Juinio, it is one of the most recognizable works associated with DMCI Group founder Engr. David M. Consunji, who built the structure early in his career.
His role in bringing the pioneering circular chapel and thin-shell concrete dome to life cemented DMCI’s legacy in the country’s architectural heritage.
The project
DMCI Homes’ in-house Concepts and Landscape Management team led the enhancements, which covered landscaping upgrades, grassing, clearing, and revitalization across the chapel grounds.
Work began in May 2024 with the aim of highlighting the chapel’s timeless architecture while creating a warm, serene outdoor setting for worshippers and the UP community during the Christmas season.
The team also collaborated with the chapel’s own landscaping staff to ensure continuity of upkeep long after the project’s completion.
What they’re saying
Landscape Architect Alexis Valiente, AVP of DMCI Homes Concepts and Landscape Management, said the team approached the project with deep respect for the chapel’s legacy.
“The UP Chapel holds deep significance for the UP Diliman community. Being able to contribute to its enhancement and preservation is both a privilege and a heartfelt responsibility for our team. We hope that the refreshed surroundings offer a setting that uplifts everyone who visits,” Valiente said.
The bigger picture
The initiative extends DMCI Homes’ ongoing support for the chapel. In 2021, the company and its partners completed a major renovation that reinforced the structure and protected its cultural value for future generations.
The UP Chapel remains the only structure in the country that unites the works of five National Artists and continues to embody seven decades of faith, artistry, and innovation.
As Christmas approaches, DMCI Homes hopes the enhanced grounds offer a more peaceful, uplifting experience for church-goers and visitors celebrating the season. —Ramon C. Nocon | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
