Toyota unveiled its locally manufactured Next Generation Tamaraw Modern Public Utility Vehicle (MPUV) at its Santa Rosa, Laguna, manufacturing facility, expanding the vehicle's applications into the country's modernizing public transportation sector.
The introduction follows the Tamaraw's certification as a Class 1 MPUV by the Department of Transportation in May 2026.
Designed for intra-city transport
The development provides transport operators and cooperatives with another locally manufactured vehicle option while creating opportunities for Filipino suppliers, fabricators, body builders, and automotive workers.
The one-ton cab-over Tamaraw MPUV accommodates 11 passengers and is designed for intra-city transportation.
"Today, we add an important missing piece: a jeepney. By becoming part of everyday public transportation, the Tamaraw becomes a true national car—a vehicle for all Filipinos and visitors to the Philippines," Toyota Motor Philippines president Masando Hashimoto said in a press statemenr.
49% market share
Toyota manufactured 14,711 Tamaraw units during the first nine months of 2026, bringing cumulative production to 34,739 units since 2024.
According to the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, the Tamaraw commanded a 49 percent market share in the one-ton-and-above segment as of September.
TMP's broader network of dealers, suppliers, subsidiaries, and affiliates supports more than 83,000 jobs nationwide.
Configured from feedback
Toyota developed the MPUV configuration using feedback from government agencies, local governments, transport operators, and cooperatives.
