SM’s inclusive workplace culture fuels sustainable business growth

As the nation celebrates Women’s Month, the SM Group reaffirms its commitment to equal opportunity and meritocracy, empowering women and fostering an inclusive workplace that fuels long-term business growth.

These core principles have enabled SM to build a diverse and dynamic workforce. Currently, 64 percent of SM's workforce are women, with 58 percent of them occupying senior leadership positions—a strong testament to the company’s dedication to gender inclusivity and performance-based advancement.

Women empowerment

“Empowering women through equal opportunity and meritocracy drives performance and promotes growth of organizations,” said Elizabeth Anne “Lizanne” Uychaco, executive vice-president for corporate services, group diversity officer, and chief risk and compliance officer at SM Investments.

In SM Retail Inc., women also lead the way. Leny Hernandez, senior vice-president for human resources, shared that the workforce is made up of 60 percent women, with female executives outnumbering their male counterparts two-to-one in senior roles. “We have a number of women in merchandising, marketing, and HR. That’s women-power in retail,” she added.

SM’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. The company was recently recognized at the 2024 Philippines Women’s Empowerment Principles Awards by the United Nations for its leadership in transparency and reporting on gender equality.

Sustainability-driven programs

Beyond internal initiatives, SM also extends its commitment to inclusion through sustainability-driven programs that uplift women and communities. From Tela Tales by SM Hotels to the Green Finds Tarp Project by SM Store, the group partners with women leaders and social enterprises to support environmental and economic inclusion.

As the business landscape continues to evolve, SM remains dedicated to cultivating a workplace where talent and merit thrive, regardless of gender.
