LG strengthens NVIDIA tie-up to advance humanoid robots

LG Electronics is accelerating its robotics collaboration with NVIDIA as it builds a large-scale data facility in Seoul aimed at strengthening its capabilities in physical artificial intelligence and humanoid robots.

Senior NVIDIA officials visited LG’s Data Factory, now under construction at the company’s Yangjae R&D Campus, to review their collaboration and explore opportunities to expand their partnership.

The meeting came four days after LG Group and NVIDIA signed a memorandum of understanding on Aug. 13 at NVIDIA’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California, covering strategic collaboration on future businesses.

LG said the quick follow-up reflected efforts by both companies to speed up cooperation and commercialization in robotics.

Data factory

The Data Factory, scheduled to become fully operational by year-end, will generate and process large volumes of data for training robots.

Spanning four floors with a total area of 10,000 square meters, the facility is expected to house several hundred robots by the end of the year.

LG has deployed its CLOiD home robots at the facility to perform and repeatedly learn tasks in simulated real-world environments.

One area replicates a home where robots practice cleaning, while another simulates LG’s washing machine factory in Tennessee, where robots move, stack and assemble different parts.

Robots are also being used with LG CNS logistics automation solutions and in an area where LG Innotek trains robotic hands.

Data generated from these environments will be integrated with NVIDIA’s robotics technology to produce additional synthetic and augmented data for robot training.

100,000 hours

LG expects data collected at the facility and synthetic data generated and augmented using NVIDIA Cosmos open world models to reach 100,000 hours by year-end, equivalent to roughly 12 years of continuous data.

The company plans to use the information to advance its Robot Foundation Model, which supports the performance and development of humanoid robots.

LG said a key element of its physical AI strategy is creating a “data flywheel,” in which high-quality information gathered from real-world operations is repeatedly used to train and improve robots.

The company plans to combine decades of manufacturing and logistics data with NVIDIA’s robotics technologies, including NVIDIA Omniverse libraries, Cosmos open world models and the Isaac robotics development platform.

The Data Factory will also serve as a hub for processing robot-learning information collected from LG manufacturing and logistics sites and home appliances worldwide.

Robotics push

LG has designated 2026 as the starting point of a broader push into robotics as it seeks to establish itself as a comprehensive robotics solutions provider.

The company established a Robotics Business Center in July that reports directly to the CEO and oversees its robotics operations across the organization.

LG already operates in industrial and commercial robotics and plans to expand further into home robots.

The company said its manufacturing expertise and development of key robotic components, including actuators, give it capabilities spanning components, hardware and finished products.

Combining these strengths with large-scale data and software capabilities is expected to support LG’s expansion in physical AI.
