Hans Sy says hard work keeps the Sy siblings young

For tycoon Hans Sy, work isn’t a burden. It’s simply a way of life for the family that runs one of the country’s biggest conglomerates, the SM Group.

Midway through his MAP Management Person of the Year acceptance speech on Monday, he showed his playful side, underscoring the tight bond among the brood of six he was born into.

“Working hard is second nature to our family. We were raised to believe that there is dignity in every kind of work. My siblings and I still follow that rule today. We are in the office or on-site six days a week. But I would not really call it work. It is what we love to do,” he said.

He playfully teased that this is why they all look a little younger than the calendar suggests.

“I would also like to think that this is why none of us look our age. Especially my two sisters Tessie and Elizabeth,” he said of his siblings born ahead of him.

“I believe most of you think they were my younger sisters,” he added.

Both SM Investments vice chair Teresita Sy-Coson and SM Hotels and Conventions head Elizabeth Sy, guests at the MAP Person of the Year awards, were seen laughing at the lighthearted moment.
