From food delivery to ride-hailing: A mom’s journey of empowerment with Xpress

Xpress, a  ride-hailing platform of the Cebuana  Lhuillier Group, joins the global celebration of exceptional women with its #InspireInclusion campaign, showing the growing presence of women in the once male-dominated ride-hailing industry.

This shift showcases women's resilience and strength, with inspiring stories like that of Irene Sicabalo.

Irene, a mother of two, entered the logistics field in 2019 at the age of 35, starting as a food delivery rider. Seeking financial stability, she and her partner transitioned to full-time riding, leaving behind traditional employment.

Balancing motherhood and job

When Irene discovered Xpress on social media, she was intrigued by its potential to help supplement her family’s income.

A newcomer to the ride-hailing industry, Xpress was launched by the group in early 2024. Since then, it has been expanding its services, focusing on Metro Manila's central business districts, including Makati, Pasig, and Taguig. It intends to expand its app services to various tourist destinations across the Philippines, starting with Boracay with its 'Boracay Xpress.'

A typical day for Irene begins with preparing her children for school and dropping them off before starting her workday with Xpress. By evening, she wraps up bookings and returns home to her family. Balancing motherhood and her career, Irene exemplifies dedication and determination.

Breaking barriers

Mastering motorcycle riding was initially a challenge for Irene, but her determination paid off. With rigorous practice and support from fellow riders, she passed the Xpress driving skills assessment and became an active driver.

"This job has allowed me to ease my family’s financial burdens and show that women are equally capable," Irene shared.

The journey hasn’t been without obstacles. From enduring harsh weather to facing skepticism from neighbors, Irene remained undeterred. "If men can do it, then women can too!" she asserted, reflecting her unwavering belief in her capabilities.

Irene's passion for breaking gender norms extends beyond her career. An enthusiast of martial arts like Karate and Taekwondo, she has consistently embraced challenges that push her limits.

Pursuing dreams

Her message to women is simple yet powerful: “Life’s challenges don’t define us. This work isn’t about gender—it’s about perseverance, love for what we do, and keeping faith.”

With more women joining ride-hailing platforms like Xpress, the industry is becoming a beacon of gender equality, inspiring countless others to break barriers and pursue their dreams. —Ed: CSN
