As the holiday travel season approaches, Filipino travelers are expanding their horizons, balancing tried-and-tested Asian destinations with a growing appetite for emerging international escapes, according to booking trends from Trip.com.

Data from the online travel platform for the first half of 2026 showed that while nearby destinations remain the backbone of outbound travel, more Filipinos are venturing beyond traditional holiday hotspots in search of unique experiences.

The shift reflects greater confidence in international travel, improved connectivity and a stronger desire to make vacations more memorable.

Regional favorites

Hong Kong remained the top international destination for Filipino travelers, followed by Singapore, Tokyo, Bangkok and Taipei.

In a company statement, Trip.com said these cosmopolitan hubs continue to dominate holiday itineraries because of their accessibility, affordability and relatively short travel times.

The trend aligns with observations from the Department of Tourism that Filipinos continue to favor short-haul international trips, where lower travel costs and convenient flight schedules make overseas vacations more attainable.

The sustained popularity of these destinations suggests that convenience remains a major consideration, especially during the busy holiday period when travelers seek to maximize limited vacation days.

New frontiers

While established destinations continue to attract the largest share of travelers, Trip.com's booking data points to rapidly growing interest in less traditional destinations.

Palau recorded the fastest year-on-year growth in bookings at 663 percent, followed by Oman at 482 percent, Saudi Arabia at 145 percent, Vietnam at 122 percent, Australia at 80 percent and Canada at 67 percent.

The company said these gains indicate that Filipino travelers are becoming increasingly willing to explore destinations that were once considered niche. Expanding airline connectivity, broader destination awareness and the search for fresh experiences are helping fuel this trend.

Even in familiar countries, travelers are venturing beyond the usual gateway cities.

Vietnam illustrates this shift. While the country remains a favorite destination, bookings to Da Nang surged 483 percent from a year earlier, while Hanoi posted 145-percent growth.

The figures suggest that repeat travelers are looking beyond established tourist routes to discover new cities and local experiences instead of revisiting the same destinations.

Experience first

Trip.com's data also showed that travelers are increasingly choosing destinations based on the experiences they offer rather than simply their location.

Among Filipino travelers, Hong Kong Disneyland emerged as the most-booked international attraction during the first half of 2026.

It was followed by Ocean Park Hong Kong, Universal Studios Singapore and Universal Studios Japan.

The popularity of these attractions highlights the growing importance of experience-driven travel, with families, couples and groups of friends placing greater value on entertainment and shared memories than on traditional sightseeing alone.

Seasonal tourism campaigns are also helping shape travel choices.

Hong Kong's Summer Fun 2026 campaign, for example, offers limited-time promotions on hotels, attractions and travel experiences through August, encouraging visitors to extend their itineraries and explore more than the city's iconic landmarks.

Holiday outlook

As year-end travel demand builds, Trip.com expects Filipino travelers to continue combining familiar destinations with new discoveries.

The booking trends point to an evolving travel mindset in which convenience still matters, but curiosity and meaningful experiences are increasingly influencing where Filipinos choose to spend their holidays.

With more destinations becoming accessible and travelers planning trips earlier, the upcoming holiday season is expected to reflect a broader, more adventurous approach to international travel—one that values memorable experiences as much as the destination itself. —Ed: Corrie S Narisma
