BCDA teams up with S. Korea’s K-Water to power smart water systems in PH ecozones

In a move to integrate world-class water management systems into its flagship developments, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) recently sent a delegation to Korea Water Resources Corp. (K-Water) in Hwaseong, South Korea, for a high-level benchmarking visit.

The team, led by BCDA Chair Atty. Hilario B. Paredes and President and CEO Joshua M. Bingcang, toured K-Water’s advanced facilities to gain insights on smart water infrastructure, sewage monitoring, and sustainable resource management.

The visit is part of BCDA’s broader strategy to enhance water sustainability across New Clark City in Tarlac, Camp John Hay in Baguio, and Poro Point in La Union.

“As a pioneer in innovative water management solutions, K-Water will play a vital role in shaping future water infrastructure in our economic zones,” Bingcang said. “This partnership allows us to integrate smart technologies while fulfilling our duty to protect the environment.”

K-Water president Yoon Seok-dae reaffirmed the agency’s support, highlighting its commitment to help BCDA address rising water demands through cutting-edge, sustainable solutions.

The visit follows the signing of two memoranda of understanding between BCDA and K-Water in July 2024.

The South Korean agency is currently conducting feasibility studies for the three BCDA-managed sites. These include plans for AI-powered water purification plants, intelligent network management, and significant water loss reduction—all designed to ensure a stable and eco-friendly water supply.

Once implemented, the initiative will benefit locators and residents of New Clark City—touted as the country’s first smart and sustainable metropolis—as well as support tourism and environmental preservation efforts in Camp John Hay and Poro Point.

This collaboration aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDGs 6, 11, 12, and 13, focused on clean water, sustainable communities, responsible consumption, and climate action. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
