  • Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation donates P3 million to support tamaraw conservation efforts in Mindoro
  • Funding will strengthen habitat monitoring, scientific research, ranger training and conservation facilities
  • The tamaraw population in Mounts Iglit-Baco Natural Park increased to 425 in 2026 from 380 in 2025

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has committed P3 million to protect the critically endangered tamaraw, reinforcing its biodiversity conservation initiatives as the automaker approaches its three-millionth cumulative vehicle sales milestone.

The donation, coursed through Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation, will support the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR) Tamaraw Conservation Program, which protects the wild buffalo species found exclusively on Mindoro Island.

Conservation partnership

The agreement was formalized during the 2026 Tamaraw Fiesta in Calintaan, Occidental Mindoro, through a memorandum of agreement involving TMP Foundation, DENR's Tamaraw Conservation Program Office and Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. (MBCFI).

TMP Foundation operations manager Nelson Manglo, DENR-MIMAROPA regional executive director Felix Mirasol Jr. and MBCFI executive director Kathy Lene Cielo signed the agreement, with MBCFI designated as fund manager.

The P3-million allocation will finance habitat monitoring, scientific research, volunteer capacity-building and public awareness campaigns.

A significant portion will upgrade the Tamaraw Research and Conservation Center with equipment supporting wildlife monitoring and long-term species protection.

Population recovery

The investment comes as conservation authorities report encouraging population gains.

The 2026 Annual Tamaraw Population Count recorded 425 tamaraws in Mounts Iglit-Baco Natural Park, compared with 380 in 2025, representing an increase of approximately 11.8 percent.

The DENR attributed the improvement to sustained habitat protection, scientific monitoring, law enforcement and community participation.

Long-term commitment

Toyota's conservation partnership began in December 2024 alongside the launch of its Next Generation Tamaraw utility vehicle.

In 2025, the automaker donated a Tamaraw vehicle for field operations and P500,000 worth of Bantay Tamaraw kits to strengthen ranger patrols and wildlife monitoring.

The latest contribution also advances Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, particularly its objective of establishing a society in harmony with nature.
