  • Filipinos’ celebrated resilience can become a liability when the ability to recover encourages households to prepare only after disaster strikes
  • Allianz PNB Life is framing financial protection as a way to recover from shocks, while building preparedness against climate-related risks
  • The insurer sees greater demand for protection as global volatility and environmental risks make preparation more urgent

Filipino resilience has long meant finding a way forward after typhoons, floods and financial setbacks. But the same instinct to endure and rebuild can breed complacency, leaving families to respond to crises instead of preparing financially before they arrive.

Beyond conventional life protection

Allianz PNB Life is broadening its resilience push beyond conventional life protection, pairing financial solutions with efforts aimed at disaster preparedness and climate resilience. The idea is to give families resources that can help them withstand setbacks, recover over time and eventually start over.

“The world has become a very volatile and a very unpredictable space. So what happens in such a space with humans? People seek orientation. They seek stability. They seek protection. And ultimately what people will seek is trust,” Allianz PNB Life president and chief executive officer Joe Gross said during a media briefing.

“The hardest currency in an economic market is market share. Because market share means people who invest their money, they trust you,” he added.

Allianz PNB Life recorded P4.59 billion in consolidated New Business Annual Premium Equivalent in the first half of 2026, up 98 percent year-on-year and placing it third in the Philippine life insurance industry by that measure, based on Insurance Commission data.

Gross added that said the insurer’s strong first-half performance and customer growth reflect increasing trust among Filipino families, reinforcing its commitment to provide solutions and partnerships that help protect what matters most.

Insurance and savings solution

Allianz Secure Save combines life insurance with professionally managed investments, allowing Filipino breadwinners to protect their dependents while accumulating funds for longer-term goals.

The solution directs more of each premium into investments earlier and provides applicable bonuses for long-term commitment, with savings potentially supporting a child’s education, retirement or other family goals.

Capacity building, disaster preparedness

The insurer’s approach treats resilience as something built before a crisis, rather than simply demonstrated afterward.

Allianz PNB Life links its insurance and sustainability efforts through a shared focus on resilience, helping families prepare financially while supporting communities facing social and environmental risks.

Through Project Talaghay with the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation, it is supporting risk awareness, early-warning systems, local capacity-building and community-led disaster preparedness.

“People have to understand that they have to be aware of the dangers, where they live, and that they have to prepare for it before it happens. Don't just respond when it happens. Because if you care about your children, if you care about your families, you have to look around now and be prepared,” Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation president Rene “Butch” Meily said during the fireside chat.

Shaping futures of single mothers

In partnership with Bahay Tuluyan, the program helps vulnerable young single mothers achieve greater financial independence through employment, financial literacy, parenting, childcare and psychosocial support, creating better opportunities for them and their children.

“Through our products, we help families prepare financially and protect the future they are working hard to build. Through our partnerships, we strengthen resilience where it matters most. Together, these are proof points of our commitment to helping Filipino families become more resilient,” Allianz PNB Life chief marketing officer and chief of staff Zanne Magararu said. —Vanessa Hidalgo | Ed: Corrie S.
