  • Lufthansa Technik building a new base maintenance facility at Clark International Airport, expanding its Philippine footprint beyond Manila
  • The 157,000-square-meter facility is designed to accommodate up to nine widebody aircraft bays and is targeted to begin operations in 2028
  • Investment underscores growing confidence in Clark as an aviation and aerospace hub in Central Luzon

Luzon International Premiere Airport Development (LIPAD) Corp. said Lufthansa Technik Philippines’ decision to establish a new base maintenance facility at Clark International Airport reinforces the airport’s emergence as a key aviation and aerospace hub in the country.

The project was announced during the state visit of German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to the Philippines and forms part of Lufthansa Technik’s broader expansion strategy in the Asia-Pacific maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) market.

Why it matters

The investment adds another major aerospace locator to Clark, supporting efforts to position the former military air base as a center for aviation-related industries while generating high-value employment opportunities and technical expertise in the region.

Following the announcement, LIPAD president and CEO Noel F. Manankil welcomed Lufthansa Technik CEO Soeren Stark, chief human resources officer Dr. Janna Schumacher, and Lufthansa Technik Philippines president and CEO Holger Beck to Clark International Airport.

The delegation toured the airport and inspected the site identified for the future maintenance facility, which is expected to commence operations in 2028.

The details

Lufthansa Technik Philippines, a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and MacroAsia Corporation, will develop the facility on a 157,000-square-meter site within Clark International Airport.

The new facility is designed to accommodate up to nine widebody aircraft bays, significantly expanding the company’s MRO capacity and enhancing its ability to serve airline customers across Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East.

“This investment by Lufthansa Technik reflects the confidence global aviation leaders have in Clark International Airport and in the opportunities available in Central Luzon,” Manankil said in a statement.

“The airport was designed to support growth, and developments such as this demonstrate Clark's ability to accommodate world-class aviation operations. We are proud to support investments that create high-value jobs, encourage technology transfer, and contribute to the continued development of the Philippine aviation industry,” he said.

What’s next

The Clark facility will become Lufthansa Technik’s second location in the Philippines, complementing its long-established operations at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

As Lufthansa Technik’s competence center for widebody aircraft maintenance within its global network, Lufthansa Technik Philippines currently specializes in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of Airbus A330, A340, A350, and A380 aircraft, as well as Boeing 777 aircraft.

The Clark expansion will also add support for Boeing 787 aircraft, broadening the company’s service portfolio and strengthening the Philippines’ role in the global aerospace maintenance sector. —Vanessa Hidalgo | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
